Could I be raising a future accountant? I think I might be. My 6 year old daughter likes to play “taxes” with her friends. She doesn’t yet fully understand what taxes really are but she does like to mimic what she sees me do in my office. And by reading The American Girl book <a href="http://store.americangirl.com/agshop/html/item/id/174417/uid/17"target="top">Felicity, she is learning that the Patriots in 1774 didn’t agree with the King’s taxes. Also she is starting to see the benefit of counting your money and knowing what you want to spend it on.

A while back, my daughter received a “piggy bank” as a gift from her grandparents. (Not sure it really should be called a “piggy bank” since it doesn’t look anything like a pig!) The unique thing about this piggy bank though is that it has a counter built in to the lid. So every time you put a coin in, it recognizes what type of a coin it is and adds the value to the balance. This way you always know how much you have in your bank. In the words of my 6 year old, “I like this bank because it automatically counts for you!”

She really wants an <a href="http://www.americangirl.com/index.php"target="top">American Girl doll (<a href="http://store.americangirl.com/agshop/static/felicitydoll.jsp"target="top">Felicity Merriman to be specific), so she is now saving her money for this purpose. She is excited that every time she adds a coin she can see the total amount she has and then we are keeping track of how much more she needs to be able to get her doll.

On a real simple level she is accounting for her money and also using a budget. These are two important concepts that I am excited to be teaching her. They will benefit her as she becomes an adult both personally and professionally (even if she decides to pursue a career besides accounting!)

It’s amazing to me to see how something so simple as a piggy bank that counts coins can get a child so excited and really help teach her such important lessons! What simple yet effective methods have you used to teach children (or even adults) about the basics of accounting and budgeting?

IRS Summertime Tax Tip 2010-13

The Internal Revenue Service may have money for you. Was your income below the limit that requires you to file a tax return? If so, you may still be due a refund.

If you have not filed a prior year tax return and are due a refund, you should consider filing the return to claim that refund. If you are missing a refund for a previously filed tax return, you should contact the IRS to check the status of your refund and confirm your current address.

Unclaimed Refunds

Some people may have had taxes withheld from their wages but were not required to file a tax return because they had too little income. Others may not have had any tax withheld but would be eligible for the refundable Earned Income Tax Credit.

To collect this money a return must be filed with the IRS no later than three years from the due date of the return.

If no return is filed to claim the refund within three years, the money becomes the property of the U.S. Treasury.

There is no penalty assessed by the IRS for filing a late return qualifying for a refund.

Current and prior year tax forms and instructions are available on the Forms and Publications page of <a href="http://www.irs.gov"target="top">IRS.gov or by calling 800-TAX-FORM (800-829-3676).

Information about the Earned Income Tax Credit and how to claim it is also available on IRS.gov.

Undeliverable Refunds

Were you expecting a refund check but didn’t get it?

Refund checks are mailed to your last known address. Checks are returned to the IRS if you move without notifying the IRS or the U.S. Postal Service.

You may be able to update your address with the IRS on the “Where’s My Refund?” feature available on <a href="http://www.irs.gov"target="top">IRS.gov. You will be prompted to provide an updated address if there is an undeliverable check outstanding within the last 12 months.

You can also ensure the IRS has your correct address by filing Form 8822, Change of Address, which is available on <a href="http://www.irs.gov"target="top">IRS.gov or can be ordered by calling 800-TAX-FORM (800-829-3676).

If you do not have access to the Internet and think you may be missing a refund, you should first check your records or contact your tax preparer. If your refund information appears correct, call the IRS toll-free assistance line at 800-829-1040 to check the status of your refund and confirm your address.

IRS Summertime Tax Tips 2010-12

If you forgot to include some income or to take a deduction on your tax return – you can correct it by amending your tax return.

In some cases, you do not need to amend your tax return. The Internal Revenue Service usually corrects math errors or requests missing forms – such as W-2s or schedules – when processing an original return. In these instances, do not amend your return.

However, you should file an amended return if any of the following were reported incorrectly:

Your filing status

Your dependents

Your total income

Your deductions or credits

You may also elect to amend your 2009 return if you are eligible to claim the first-time homebuyer credit for a qualified 2010 home purchase. The amended tax return will allow you to claim the homebuyer credit on your 2009 return without waiting until next year to claim it on the 2010 return.

Use Form 1040X, Amended U.S. Individual Income Tax Return, to correct a previously filed Form 1040, 1040A or 1040EZ. Be sure to check the box for the year of the return you are amending on the Form 1040X, Line B. If you are amending more than one tax return, prepare a 1040X for each return and mail them in separate envelopes to the appropriate IRS processing center.. The 1040X instructions list the addresses for the centers.

The newly revised Form 1040X (Rev. January 2010) now has only one column used to show the corrected figures. There is an area on the front of the form where you explain why you are filing Form 1040X.

If the changes involve other schedules or forms, attach them to the Form 1040X. For example, if you are filing a 1040X because you have a qualifying child and now want to claim the Earned Income Credit, you must attach a Schedule EIC, Earned Income Credit to show the qualifying person’s name, year of birth and Social Security number.

If you are filing to claim an additional refund, wait until you have received your original refund before filing Form 1040X. You may cash that check while waiting for any additional refund. If you owe additional tax for 2009, you should file Form 1040X and pay the tax as soon as possible to limit interest and penalty charges. Interest is charged on any tax not paid by the due date of the original return, without regard to extensions.

Generally, to claim a refund, you must file Form 1040X within three years from the date you filed your original return or within two years from the date you paid the tax, whichever is later.

Form 1040X and instructions are available at <a href="http://www.irs.gov"target="top">IRS.gov or by calling 800-TAX-FORM (800-829-3676).

Taxpayers need to be careful to protect their personal information. Identity thieves use many methods to steal personal information and then they use the information to file a tax return and get a refund. Here are 10 things the IRS wants you to know about identity theft so you can avoid becoming the victim of an identity thief.

The IRS does not initiate contact with a taxpayer by e-mail.

If you receive a scam e-mail claiming to be from the IRS, forward it to the IRS at phishing@irs.gov.

Identity thieves get your personal information by many different means, including:

Stealing your wallet or purse

Posing as someone who needs information about you through a phone call or e-mail

Looking through your trash for personal information

Accessing information you provide to an unsecured Internet site.

If you discover a website that claims to be the IRS but does not begin with ‘www.irs.gov’, forward that link to the IRS at phishing@irs.gov.

To learn how to identify a secure website, visit the Federal Trade Commission at <a href="http://www.onguardonline.gov/tools/recognize-secure-site-using-ssl.aspx"target="top">www.onguardonline.gov/tools/recognize-secure-site-using-ssl.aspx

If your Social Security number is stolen, another individual may use it to get a job. That person’s employer may report income earned by them to the IRS using your Social Security number, thus making it appear that you did not report all of your income on your tax return.

Your identity may have been stolen if a letter from the IRS indicates more than one tax return was filed for you or the letter states you received wages from an employer you don’t know. If you receive such a letter from the IRS, leading you to believe your identity has been stolen, respond immediately to the name, address or phone number on the IRS notice.

If your tax records are not currently affected by identity theft, but you believe you may be at risk due to a lost wallet, questionable credit card activity, or credit report, you need to provide the IRS with proof of your identity. You should submit a copy of your valid government-issued identification – such as a Social Security card, driver’s license, or passport – along with a copy of a police report and/or a completed Form 14039, Identity Theft Affidavit. As an option, you can also contact the IRS Identity Protection Specialized Unit, toll-free at 800-908-4490. You should also follow FTC guidance for reporting identity theft at <a href="http://www.ftc.gov/idtheft"target="top">www.ftc.gov/idtheft.

Show your Social Security card to your employer when you start a job or to your financial institution for tax reporting purposes. Do not routinely carry your card or other documents that display your Social Security number.

For more information about identity theft – including information about how to report identity theft, phishing and related fraudulent activity – visit the IRS Identity Theft and Your Tax Records Page, which you can find by searching “Identity Theft” on the <a href="http://www.irs.gov"target="top">IRS.gov home page.

IRS Summertime Tax Tip 2010-10

The Taxpayer Advocate Service is an independent organization within the Internal Revenue Service. TAS helps taxpayers who are experiencing economic harm such as not being able to provide necessities like housing, transportation, or food, taxpayers who are seeking help in resolving problems with the IRS, and those who believe an IRS system or procedure is not working as it should. Here are seven things every taxpayer should know about TAS.

The Taxpayer Advocate Service is your voice at the IRS.

TAS service is free, confidential, and tailored to meet your needs.

You may be eligible for TAS help if you have tried to resolve your tax problem through normal IRS channels and have gotten nowhere, or you believe an IRS procedure just isn’t working as it should.

TAS helps taxpayers whose problems are causing financial difficulty or significant cost, including the cost of professional representation. This includes businesses as well as individuals.

TAS employees know the IRS and how to navigate it. If you qualify for TAS help, your case will be assigned to an advocate who will listen to your problem, help you understand what needs to be done to resolve it, and stay with you every step of the way until your problem is resolved.

There is at least one local taxpayer advocate office in every state, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico. You can call your local advocate, whose number is in your phone book, in Pub. 1546, Taxpayer Advocate Service — Your Voice at the IRS, and on the website at <a href="http://www.irs.gov/advocate"target="top">www.irs.gov/advocate. You can also call toll-free number at 1-877-777-4778 or TTY/TDD 1-800-829-4059

You can learn about your rights and responsibilities as a taxpayer by visiting the TAS online tax toolkit at www.taxtoolkit.irs.gov. You can get updates on hot tax topics by visiting the TAS YouTube channel at <a href="http://www.youtube.com/tasnta"target="top">www.youtube.com/tasnta and the TAS Facebook page at <a href="http://www.facebook.com/YourVoiceAtIRS"target="top">http://www.facebook.com/YourVoiceAtIRS, or by following TAS tweets at <a href="http://twitter.com/YourVoiceatIRS"target="top">http://twitter.com/YourVoiceatIRS.

Do you need assistance with a tax issue that can’t be handled online or on the phone? If you want to meet with an IRS representative face-to-face, come to your local IRS Taxpayer Assistance Center. Here are eight reasons to visit an IRS TAC.

Notices or letters Have you received a letter or notice and need face-to-face assistance to understand the next step? No appointment is necessary — just walk in.

Multilingual Assistance Don’t let a language barrier prevent you from getting the face-to-face tax assistance you may need. Multilingual services are offered to taxpayers in over 150 languages. These services are provided through bilingual employees and an Over-the-Phone Interpreter.

Payments You can make payments at your local IRS TAC. Be sure you know the tax period and the type of tax for the payment you are making. If you received a notice from the IRS, be sure to bring it with you.

Free Federal Tax Return Preparation Your local TAC will prepare both current and prior year basic tax returns for those who qualify for Earned Income Tax Credit or those whose income is less than $49,000.

Form 2290, Heavy Highway Vehicle Use Tax Return Your local TAC can help you prepare Form 2290, accept your payment and provide the needed receipts for you to take when registering your vehicle.

Individual Taxpayer Identification Number If you are not eligible for a Social Security Number but need to file a tax return, bring the completed tax return, Form W-7, Application for IRS Individual Identification Number and certified identification documents to your local TAC to apply for your ITIN and file your return. For more information, see Publication 519, U.S. Tax Guide for Aliens.

Alien Clearances Before leaving the United States, most aliens must obtain a certificate of tax compliance. This document, also popularly known as the sailing permit or departure permit, must be secured from the IRS before leaving the U.S. You can get the permit from your local TAC. For more information, see Publication 513, Tax Information for Visitors to the United States.

Tax Return and Tax Account Transcripts Do you need a copy of your tax return for financial aid or to obtain a mortgage? If so, a tax return or tax account transcript will generally meet the requirements of these lending institutions. Visit your local TAC for free transcripts, which are generally available for the current and past three years.

TAC locations, business hours and an overview of services are available at <a href="http://www.irs.gov"target="top">IRS.gov. Just go to the “Individuals” tab and click on the link for Contact My Local Office in the left tool bar section under IRS Resources.

The Internal Revenue Service issues a list of the top 12 tax scams each year – known as the Dirty Dozen. The scams are illegal and can lead to problems for taxpayers including significant penalties, interest and possible criminal prosecution. These scams don’t just happen during the tax filing season, they can happen anytime during the year. Here are five scams from the 2010 Dirty Dozen list every taxpayer should be aware of this summer.

Phishing Phishing is a tactic used by scam artists to trick unsuspecting victims into revealing personal or financial information in an electronic communication. Scams can take the form of e-mails, tweets or phony websites and they try to mislead consumers by telling them they are entitled to a tax refund from the IRS and they must reveal personal information to claim it. Regardless of how official this e-mail may look and sound, the IRS never initiates unsolicited e-mail contact with taxpayers about their tax issues. Phishers use the personal information obtained to steal the victim’s identity, access bank accounts, run up credit card charges or apply for loans in the victim’s name. If you receive an e-mail that you suspect is a phishing attempt or directs you to an imitation IRS website, please forward it to the IRS at phishing@irs.gov. You can also visit IRS.gov and enter the keyword phishing for additional information.

Return Preparer Fraud Dishonest tax return preparers can cause trouble for taxpayers who fall victim to their ploys. Such preparers are skimming a portion of their clients’ refunds, charging inflated fees for tax preparation or are attracting new clients by promising refunds that are too good to be true. To increase confidence in the tax system, the IRS is requiring all paid return preparers to register with the IRS, pass competency tests and attend continuing education.

Hiding Income Offshore Taxpayers have tried to avoid or evade U.S. income tax by hiding income in offshore banks and brokerage accounts. IRS agents continue to develop their investigations of these offshore tax avoidance transactions using information gained from more than 14,700 voluntary disclosures received last year. Taxpayers also evade taxes by using offshore debit cards, credit cards, wire transfers, foreign trusts, employee-leasing schemes, private annuities or life insurance plans.

Abuse of Charitable Organizations and Deductions The IRS continues to observe the misuse of tax-exempt organizations. This includes arrangements to improperly shield income or assets from taxation and attempts by donors to maintain control over donated assets. The IRS also continues to investigate various schemes where donations are highly overvalued or the organization receiving the donation promises that the donor can purchase the items back at a later date at a price the donor sets.

Frivolous Arguments Promoters of frivolous schemes encourage people to make unreasonable and outlandish claims to avoid paying the taxes they owe. If a scheme seems too good to be true, it probably is. The IRS has a list of frivolous legal positions that taxpayers should avoid on IRS.gov. These arguments are false and have been thrown out of court.

Summer is a busy time for everyone, but particularly for military members and their families. Whether it’s moving to a new base or traveling to a duty station, members of the military have many obligations that could impact their tax situation. Here are 10 IRS tax tips military members should keep in mind this summer to help with filing a tax return next year.

Moving Expenses If you are a member of the Armed Forces on active duty and you move because of a permanent change of station, you can deduct the reasonable unreimbursed expenses of moving you and members of your household.

Combat Pay If you serve in a combat zone as an enlisted person or as a warrant officer for any part of a month, all your military pay received for military service that month is not taxable. For officers, the monthly exclusion is capped at the highest enlisted pay, plus any hostile fire or imminent danger pay received.

Extension of Deadlines The time for taking care of certain tax matters can be postponed. The deadline for filing tax returns, paying taxes, filing claims for refund, and taking other actions with the IRS is automatically extended for qualifying members of the military.

Uniform Cost and Upkeep If military regulations prohibit you from wearing certain uniforms when off duty, you can deduct the cost and upkeep of those uniforms, but you must reduce your expenses by any allowance or reimbursement you receive.

Joint Returns Generally, joint returns must be signed by both spouses. However, when one spouse may not be available due to military duty, a power of attorney may be used to file a joint return.

Travel to Reserve Duty If you are a member of the US Armed Forces Reserves, you can deduct unreimbursed travel expenses for traveling more than 100 miles away from home to perform your reserve duties.

ROTC Students Subsistence allowances paid to ROTC students participating in advanced training are not taxable. However, active duty pay – such as pay received during summer advanced camp – is taxable.

Transitioning Back to Civilian Life You may be able to deduct some costs you incur while looking for a new job. Expenses may include travel, resume preparation fees, and outplacement agency fees. Moving expenses may be deductible if your move is closely related to the start of work at a new job location, and you meet certain tests.

Tax Help Most military installations offer free tax filing and preparation assistance during the filing season.

Tax Information IRS Publication 3, Armed Forces’ Tax Guide, summarizes many important military-related tax topics. Publication 3 can be downloaded from <a href="http://www.irs.gov"target="top">IRS.gov or may be ordered by calling 1-800-TAX-FORM (800-829-3676).

This credit – still available for 2010 – equals 6.2 percent of a taxpayer’s earned income. The maximum credit for a married couple filing a joint return is $800 and $400 for other taxpayers.

Eligible self-employed taxpayers can benefit from the credit by evaluating their expected income tax liability and, if they are eligible, by making the appropriate adjustments to the amounts of their estimated tax payments.

Taxpayers who fall into any of the following groups during 2010 should review their tax withholding to ensure enough tax is being withheld. Those who should pay particular attention to their withholding include:

Married couples with two incomes

Individuals with multiple jobs

Dependents

Pensioners

Workers without valid Social Security numbers

Having too little tax withheld could result in potentially smaller refunds or – in limited instances –small balance due rather than an expected refund.

The Making Work Pay tax credit is reduced or unavailable for higher-income taxpayers. The reduction in the credit begins at $75,000 of income for single taxpayers and $150,000 for couples filing a joint return.

A quick withholding check using the IRS Withholding Calculator on <a href="http://www.irs.gov"target="top">IRS.gov may be helpful for anyone who believes their current withholding may not be right. Taxpayers can also check their withholding by using the worksheets in IRS Publication 919, How Do I Adjust My Tax Withholding?. Adjustments can be made by filing a revised Form W-4, Employee’s Withholding Allowance Certificate.
